Genioplasty/Chin Augmentation

North Coast Max Facs Dr Scott Armstrong Aesthetic Medicine Chin Surgery Ballina

The shape or position of the chin may be altered surgically - this is known as a genioplasty (or mentoplasty). This can be undertaken for aesthetic reasons, such as improving the lower jaw-line or facial symmetry, or in some circumstances to help re-suspend the muscles of the neck and aid in opening the airway.

A genioplasty is performed under general anaesthetic, and is sometimes done in conjunction with other facial cosmetic procedures or orthognathic (jaw re-positioning) surgery.

Whilst a number of approaches and means of augmenting or re-shaping the chin are possible, Dr Armstrong’s preferred approach is to undertake a bony re-position, which is shown to be more stable with time, avoids known implant complications such as infection or extrusion, and can be done through a small incision inside the mouth, avoiding the need to make any external incisions through the skin. In some cases, re-positioning the chin can also have the added effect of reducing strain on the surrounding muscles, and improving the soft-tissue profile of the chin.

As with all surgical procedures, there are some risks involved, such as bruising and swelling, loss of sensation of the chin or lower lip (which is usually temporary), and more rarely, bleeding or infection.

A genioplasty is highly individualised, and like any other cosmetic procedure, requires a thorough assessment and careful consideration to decide on the best approach.
